The essence of the programme was to demystify learning and build the girls' confidence, and we believe it happened.

The Girls were in teams, supervised by our collaborating team and the Leadership Foundation For African Girl Child And Women team. It was brainstorming and revealing. The Local Government Health Official, Nurse Precious, was part of the collaborating team. After the discussion, they presented their papers in a simple language that everyone understood. Day one was for the out-of-school teenage girls and teenage single mothers.

Day Two (2), was held on June 10, for all the teenage girls and the Single Teenage Mothers from the nineteen villages. On the second day, we evaluated the challenges and offered possible solutions. The NAPTIP Official from Umuahia, Nkemdilim, did a presentation on the security of the girl child at the local community level. Nurse Precious from the Local Community Health Care Centre made a presentation on Health-related issues, sexually transmitted diseases, and prevention of unwanted pregnancy during the two days. Our foundation team managed the individual and group activities of the day, ensuring that learnings conform with the programme theme and introduced them to activities that built their self-confidence. The Programme pattern was almost the same as the Secondary school teenage girls previously done on the theme. However, to demystify learning in the religious environment. We used some biblical scriptures during the programme.

Indeed, we achieved all these with the Financial Co-Sponsorship from Lady Nikky Emelike, Mrs Stella Okeke, and our other donors. Some joined us from the beginning of the programme, and some along the line to create the success story. Besides, we are glad your resources were properly managed and used for the target group, and there is evidence of impact. The Foundation promised to reach out to Six thousand girls, and we did more than that with the economic challenges faced at that time. The reason is that we do not just tell a story; we tell a success story. The online group is ongoing as we consolidate all impacts made in these new ten years through programme diversification.

Would you join us to tell the next success story?

Through our Foundation, many girls have realised their dreams and remain focused. Some girls have benefited from our scholarship sponsorship at the Primary, Secondary Schools level, and Tertiary Institutions levels. Through the Foundation, three girls graduated from the Polytechnic, School of Health, and University this year, and we registered some external examinations for the less privileged ones.

The Tenth Anniversary! It is our 10th Anniversary year, We used the previous ten years to find the girls, evaluate the issues militating against them, and fix them, and the online community is ongoing.

We appreciate you for being part of our ten years of verifiable impact and success story. We achieved the promise to reach out to 6,000 girls last year. So, trusting us again would not be a wrong decision.

Our next Ten Years is to consolidate what we have achieved, and your support again would help us do it. We need a Coaster Bus for our programmes, and a Vocational Centre to reach out to more girls and empower low-income women.

In addition to the foundation programmes, the Executive Director of our Foundation, Mrs Viola E. THE 2021 ANUAL PROGRAMME REPORT OF LEADERSHIP FOUNDATION FOR AFRICAN GIRL CHILD AND WOMEN.

PROGRAMMES

February 14 is our Humanitarian Day, the day we set aside to show care and love to some special people living around us; often, we visit a female ward in a government-owned hospital and an orphanage home with gift items and services.

In 2021, due to the Covid-19 outbreak and guidelines, we visited Ighalo Orphanage Home, Lagos, Nigeria.

On October 11th and 12th, 2021, we celebrated International Girl Child Day with two Girls’ Secondary Schools in Imo and the Abia States. Both schools are in the Eastern part of Nigeria, and over eight hundred(800) girls were in attendance. Our conversation with them happened within two days, and we taught them how to stand firm in all they do that is right, be focused, and learn the appropriate digital skills that would help them maximize their potential to achieve their life goals. In the Programme, the Executive Director of our Foundation inspired them with her books, “Effective Approaches To Parenting A Super Girl”, the first and revised edition. She gave them over three hundred (300) donated copies of her books and donated some for their school Libraries. Courtesy, Viola@50.

The schools visited were St. Theresa’s Girls’ Secondary School Olokoro Umuahia, Abia State, and Mercy Girls’ High School Okigwe, Imo State, both schools in Nigeria.

In addition to the foundation programmes, the Executive Director of our Foundation, Mrs. Viola E. Okoro, supported other organizations with their programmes as a Keynote Speaker, Guest Speaker, or guest, among others. Such programmes happened in the church, school and event place. She inspired women by telling them who they are during the TREM Ejigbo Annual Women Convention/ Mothering Sunday, 2021.

The Executive Director also inspired the children at Federal Government College Odogbolu on the Day of the African Child 2021 to accelerate the charter implementation on Child’s Rights to establish the dream Africa fit for children. Another organization she supported is the “Every Girl Wins Institute Programme” in Lagos, Nigeria. In the 2021 programme, she encouraged girls to pursue their goals without wavering because woman’s rights are human rights.

Lastly, we organized an outreach Christmas event at the local community level tagged “The Sweet Evening,” where all the girls in the local community came together to interact and discuss their aspirations. The meeting closed the gap between the rich and the less privileged girl child.

The discussion held at the school hall during the Parent and Teachers Association (PTA) meeting. She enlightened parents, teachers, and management of the school, on the need to close the parental gap created by parents’ inability to embrace the present parenting challenges and equip themselves with the required skills that could help them parent well.

Mrs. Okoro stressed on the need for parents to join hands in closing the gap. • CELEBRATING STREET CHILDREN (Promoting the “He for She” Approach To Girl Child Issues)

Venue: Ronik International School, Ejigbo Visitor’s Car Park

Event: Children’s Day Celebration

Date: May 27, 2019

Children’s Day, being May 27 of every year is the day set aside by the United Nations to celebrate children all over the world. On this day, a lot of children make various demands (that are of interest to them) from their parents. However, most children who found themselves not privileged to leave in flats or mansions but in a face me I face you house or street (Street boys and girls) hardly enjoy the same privilege that the children from Semi Elite or Elite homes have.

Considering the disadvantaged/less privileged children living among us, Leadership Foundation for African Girl Child and Women celebrated Children’s Day Party for the Street Children at the venue mentioned above. We used the programme to enlighten children on their rights, and some of the challenges faced by girl children. They were encouraged to join the team that is working towards the eradication of girl child abuse. The party was free, and any child passing by who was willing to catch fun was allowed to join, especially the less privileged. The programme was full of fun and inspiring.

The unique and modern dancing steps from children, whose parents were well to do, made the event memorable. There was no form of discrimination as the children had equal fun and opportunity to mingle with one another.

In the speech remark of the Executive Director of the Foundation, Mrs. Viola E. OKORO, she reminded the children that they are the future leaders of the country. As such, they should guide against selfish lifestyles and consider other children in all their dealings. They were encouraged to be good children to their families and society.

She stressed that they should have the right attitude to life and pay more attention to things that could enhance their development.

In the interactive session, children were taught about their body parts, especially the parts that are private to them. How to protect them, and report to their parents if anyone takes advantage of them.

We appreciate CWAY Food and Beverages for their (product) support, Ronik International School, Ejigbo for providing us with their school facilities, individuals who supported in cash and kind and our team, may God bless you all. Finally, to our fans, we say thank you, and God bless.

International Day of the Girl Child is slated for October 11 every year. It is a day set aside to celebrate the girl child all over the world. The video and pictures will speak more about the event.

  • Programme Evaluation

Venue: Isuti/ Igando

Date: December 5, 2019

As we know, December is assumed to be a stock-taking month for most people. Leadership Foundation for African Girl Child and Women evaluated the performance of the low-income women trained and empowered them financially for free on March 8, 2019, being “The International Women’s Day Celebration.” The program evaluation took place at Isuti, Igando, (a Lagos Suburb) in Nigeria on December 5, 2019. The programme impact was tremendous and encouraging. One of the women that were empowered usually sleeps in her husband’s shop doing nothing, but because of the programme, she now produces and sells liquid soap. She had trained six (6) women for free because our organization trained and empowered her at no cost. We appreciate the African Family Support Foundation for collaborating with us. We also appreciate individuals and co-operate organizations, especially CWAY Food and Beverages, for their product supports.

WAY FORWARD: In the year 2020, we will go on with our old projects that are inconclusive, but if the need for a new programme arises, we would look at it and consider it, if the project is essential to us.

Note: All our programmes are free for girls and women and mentoring girls is one on one basis. This can be done through online or offline depending on proximity and urgency.

Train Women Train Nations Project is ongoing although, most women didn’t return the loan without interest given to them however; we would keep on trying until we get a team out of them that can change others because their transformation can actually come from within.

SCHOLARSHIPS

The tuition scholarship is ongoing and supporting the girl child progressive development is ongoing as well. We register students for WAEC/ NECO exams depending on availability of funds because the registration  is sponsored by individuals.

SUMMARY OF OUR 2016 PROGRAMME

SUMMARY OF OUR 2016 PROGRAMME

We were able to organise four programmes in 2016 with the Valentine Day visit to orphanage homes and a hospital female ward. The outcome of these programmes and their details were well reported and these can be accessed on our web page. It was amazing and the girls are asking for more.

Report of Our Valentine Visits

Title: Welfare package

Venue: General Hospital Female Ward) and an orphanage home (Compassionate Orphanage Home in Igandu) in Alimosho Local Government Area in Lagos State, Nigeria.

Date of Event:  February 14, 2016.

Early in the year, February 14, 2016 to be précise, was another memorable day in the life of our loved ones. Usually our foundation shows love by visiting and showing love to our target group; so we did the same this year by visiting the female ward of a government owned hospital (Igando General Hospital Female Ward) and an orphanage home (Compassionate Orphanage Home in Igando) in Alimosho Local Government Area in Lagos State, Nigeria. This year’s visit to these places were special to us because we did not stop at giving them gifts; we also decorated their doorway with roses and spent some time with them as well.
Our visit to the orphanage home was fulfilling, the most fun part of it all was when we dressed up a physically challenged girl with our red T-shirt as our Val girl. Whenever I remember February 14, 2016, I see the joy and gratitude of the little girl through her waving of hands in appreciation and the beautiful smile displayed on her face while we were leaving her home. We are having discussion with an NGO, which can bring out the best in her because her case is not within our scope but in their niche area. The collaborating NGO has taken over the case.

Report Of Awareness And Mentoring Programme

Title: Catch Them Young!

Venue:  Igandu/Ikotun LCDA Hall, Lagos, Nigeria.

Date of Event:  July 14, 2016.

Over the years, a lot of attention has been given to the teenage girl- child and her life issues. Much support had been given to transform them and make them better persons. However, enough support had not been given to them in their early childhood stage on how to make effective and right decisions at this early stage of life and that could be one of the reasons for the challenges some of them are facing and finding difficult to handle. Such issues include rape, low esteem, lack of confidence, insecurity, lack of proper information and peer pressure, among others.

Considering the issues mentioned above, we were able to organise this programme in partnership with State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Lagos for public primary schools under Alimosho Local Government Area, which was fully sponsored by individuals, an organisation (product support) and the Foundation Board of Trustees. The programme was organised for young girls within the age bracket of 6 years and 12 years. Our niche remains the girl-child and women; however, few boys within this age group were present and benefited from the programme as well. We let the boys in to benefit from the programme since they have sisters and would grow up always having one thing or the other to do with girls and women coupled with the fact that the right information can mould them and make them good future friends and husbands, which can encourage peaceful co-existence in today’s society. The boys can receive knowledge that would enable them create more awareness on the issues militating against the girl-child and this can reduce or completely eradicate some of the challenges being faced by girls in today’s society, over time.

Over ten public primary schools were in attendance. Their teachers, facilitators of the programme and some government education board officials were present as well.

The Executive Director of Leadership Foundation For African Girl Child and Women, Mrs. Viola Okoro, addressed the children on what they were expected to do during the programme and the benefits of the programme. She emphasised on how the participants’ sincere contribution can support other children through the Foundation’s platform. The children set the ball rolling by performing activities such as dance and drama.

The programme focus was on creating awareness on child abuse, building self- esteem and laying emphasis on how overall education of a girl-child can help her maximise her potentials. The Executive Director of the Foundation and Dr. Tola Osagie of Ejigbo Health Centre who handled the sexuality education aspect made presentations. Dr Osagie explained different types of touch, the good touch and the dangerous ones, how to report to the appropriate authority when touched in a manner that is not appropriate.

The participants were taught things that can lead to sexual abuse and how to avoid them. The children participated in dance and drama, which made learning easy. They were mentored on forms of child abuse using audio and video clips and presentation slides on how to identify an abused person and the support to give before informing appropriate person or authority and how to handle the situation, the appropriate authority to call and the role of parents, teachers, guardians and leaders, among others, in giving support to person in such situations.

The role of self- perception in building self- esteem was also emphasised for them to be able to take decision that can promote them in life.

We also discussed those who could abuse a child, which led to their own input during the programme and it became an interactive session during which we got more of them talking.

To assess their level of assimilation, Question & Answer session was introduced as well. We were amazed at the level of information these children were able to access during the programme which was revealed by our after – programme evaluation. They had a lot of questions to ask in order to have a proper understanding of child abuse and other life-related issues and it appeared the appropriate people were yet to be found or maybe they were not sure who to meet for appropriate information.

The teachers were not left out in our mentoring session as they were able to learn something new from the programme and acknowledged the programme as worthy of a repeat. The programme came to an end after all the questions were addressed. It is worth noting that schools, parents and organisations, among others, that have something to do with children should consider this programme with any appropriate authority of their choice. It was real fun with them!

In conclusion, we are appealing to any change-maker to catch the children young, may be it would help us to actualise our goals in developing them on time so that their output would be maximised, especially the girl-child who has a lot of challenges to face before becoming an adult.

Report of celebration of the International Day of the Girl-child

Title: Digital literacy as a communication tool to sustainable development goal.

Venue:  Digital Bridge Institute, Cappa Oshodi, Lagos.

Date of Event:  October 11, 2016.

The International Day of Girl–child is a day set aside by the United Nations to celebrate girls worldwide. In order to tackle some of the issues militating against girls and women in Nigeria, we believe that exposure to digital world would be of an immense support to them. Leadership Foundation for African Girl-Child and Women, an N.G.O in Nigeria, organised a digital literacy for selected public and private secondary school female leaders with few boys among them to celebrate her day in Lagos.

This year programme was marked in collaboration with UNaids, UNfpa, and selected media. An opening speech was read by the Executive Director of the Foundation, Mrs. Viola Okoro, who emphasised on how digital literacy can support girls and women in achieving their life goals and dreams. Teenage female leaders from four secondary schools presented papers on the theme as well as UNAids represented by Dr Olubunmi Asa and UNFPA represented by Mrs Ijaye. They spoke on how digital literacy has helped them in achieving their organisational agenda. Mrs Josphyn Uba from The SUN Newspaper also made a presentation from the communication perspective. The students were provided with fifty laptops for practical and they were able to have experience on many things they can achieve using digital tools. They were able to boot their computers and also processed a word document each.

The programme was in an interactive forum, as the young leaders asked a lot of questions. Answers were given and the teachers contributed in the session as well. At the end of the programme a large number of the participants’ left updated and informed, which can turn their lives around.

This year’s programme was sponsored by individuals and Nutricima limited (product support). NTA Network and NTA Channel10 covered the programme and the girls were interviewed on the programme theme. It was real fun for all of us!

Report of Equipping Girls with 21st Century Skills

Title: Project Challenge

Venue:  Baptist Model High School (B.M.H.S) Ijegun, Lagos.

Date of Event:  November 4, 2016.

The 21st century skills are set of skills that distinguish people from general public in getting things done and they are what employers look out for when employing and entrepreneurs also need these set of skills in achieving their goals.  Leadership Foundation For African Girl Child And Women in collaboration with the School Management and the Parent Teachers Association (P.T.A) of B. H. M. S organised a programme tagged “Project Challenge” as a way of exposing and empowering their Senior Secondary School girls and interested boys with these needed skills through a game-based project in a virtual business environment.

We believe that proper development of the girl-child and women would reduce the gender disparity issues and would maximise their potentials. The idea of training girls on these issues came up as a result of our previous interview on women where it was revealed that a lot of women could not maximise their potentials due to poor skills shown at the work place and in handling business transactions. Considering the outcome of our previous interview, getting girls involved with these skills early enough would help them close the gap at an early stage and achieve their goals on time.

The students really enjoyed it; they worked in groups with leadership roles assigned, and it involved a lot of thinking, proper communication and team creative spirit, among others.  It was real fun and we were really encouraged to return for the junior girls as well.  There was room for question and answers and the feedback forms revealed high level of impact.

The programme was in an interactive form, the participants asked a lot of questions, the right answers were given and the selected teachers and P.T.A Officials were not left out in all the sessions as well. At the end of the programme, a good number of the participants’ left with updated skills, which can turn their lives around.

Leadership Foundation for African Girl Child and Women is a non-profit organization that aims at supporting the Girl- Child and Women to maximise their potentials through a winning attitude. An inclusive provider of advocacy, education and support services, we are here to help the girls and the women because their best counts in our nation’s transformation programme.

The one-day event brings together young girls, career women and social workers in a unique and conducive environment to address issues concerning the girl-child and identifying ways of overcoming such issues. It provides a forum for potential mentees and mentors to meet. It is free, relaxing, interacting and educational. The goal of the programme is to bring girls from the teenage group and above to discuss common problems and get guidance from experienced people.

The seminar is the first in a series that will be rolled out in cities across Nigeria where leading professionals in areas that can enhance the girl-child in maximising her potentials.

Most young girls in their teens and above are faced with various challenges especially in the area of abuse and poverty, resulting in many girls dropping out of school. The programme aims to bridge the gap in awareness and support for the girl-child.

There are things that can be done to help reduce or completely eradicate these challenges placed on the girl-child, exposure to certain trainings, access to counsellors, mentors, leaders, NGOs, to mention but a few, can go a long way to restore their mindset on how the society sees them and become better persons in life. They are actually looking for whom to air their views and good listener as well.

Building Winning Attitude to Girl-Child Development is the brainchild of Viola Okoro, Executive Director for Leadership Foundation for African Girl Child and Women, who as a girl-child, experienced some of these challenges, developed to overcome them and discovered the magic of the winning attitude in her studies abroad. “I worked so hard to get to the stage I am today and strongly believe that we need to pull experiences and share our success secrets with our girls, so that they would do better than most of us and maximise their output”, says Okoro, a wife and mother.

Experienced women professionals are billed to deliver papers at the seminar, while female mentors and those willing to share their experiences are invited to participate. Interested speakers/mentors/partners can contact Viola Okoro on 08033510582 or via email: viola.okoro@yahoo.com.
