PROGRAMMES 

February 14 is our Annual Humanitarian Day, the day we set aside to visit and care for some special people living around us. Often, we visit government-owned hospital female wards and orphanage homes with gift items and support that can make them feel loved. 

However, this year, we visited the Centre for Destitute Empowerment International home at 8 Makanjuola close, Akinwunmi Kosemani Street, Orisunbare Shasha, Idimu, and Jakande Junior Secondary Oke Afa where the Executive Director (Mrs Viola Okoro) of our foundation delivered a speech on Leadership Paths in a Seminar organized by the Rotary Club, Egbe District. Both venues visited were in Lagos, Nigeria.

Again, on October 11, 2022, we celebrated International Girl Child Day with teenage girls from three Federal Government Colleges in Ogun State. The Venue of the event was F. S. T. C. Ijebu-Imusin. Other Federal Government Colleges in attendance were F.G.G.C. Sagamu and F.G.C.Odogbolu. The theme is “Empowered Girls Grow Up To Be Empowered Women”. It exposed the girls to different learnings and communication skills that enhanced their empowerment. Over a thousand hundred girls were in attendance, and the programme continues online; the online community was established immediately after the programme to give them more support.

In addition to the foundation programmes, the Executive Director of our Foundation, Mrs Viola E. Okoro, supported other organizations with their programmes as a Keynote Speaker, Guest Speaker, or guest, among others. Such programmes happened in the church, school and event place, and she earned awards and recognitions in rendering such services.

OUR FOCUS IN 2023

1. The Girl Child Education and Skill Acquisition Programme will continue, and we will be more inclusive by reaching out to single teenage mothers and girls with disabilities.

2. The Low Income/Indigent Women Empowerment Programmes will continue.

3. The Mentoring Programme will continue both online and onsite.

4. Other emergency programmes that are solution driven would be given attention.

5. We will continue with the Girl Child Day Theme until we reach out to our Six thousand (6000) teenage girls target for the programme.

PROGRAMMES 

February 14 is our Humanitarian Day, the day we set aside to show care and love to some special people living around us; often, we visit a female ward in a government-owned hospital and an orphanage home with gift items and services. 

In 2021, due to the Covid-19 outbreak and guidelines, we visited Ighalo Orphanage Home, Lagos, Nigeria.

On October 11th and 12th, 2021, we celebrated International Girl Child Day with two Girls’ Secondary Schools in Imo and the Abia States. Both schools are in the Eastern part of Nigeria, and over eight hundred(800) girls were in attendance. Our conversation with them happened within two days, and we taught them how to stand firm in all they do that is right, be focused, and learn the appropriate digital skills that would help them maximize their potential to achieve their life goals. In the Programme, the Executive Director of our Foundation inspired them with her books, “Effective Approaches To Parenting A Super Girl”, the first and revised edition. She gave them over three hundred (300) donated copies of her books and donated some for their school Libraries. Courtesy, Viola@50.

The schools visited were St. Theresa’s Girls’ Secondary School Olokoro Umuahia, Abia State, and Mercy Girls’ High School Okigwe, Imo State, both schools in Nigeria.

In addition to the foundation programmes, the Executive Director of our Foundation, Mrs. Viola E. Okoro, supported other organizations with their programmes as a Keynote Speaker, Guest Speaker, or guest, among others. Such programmes happened in the church, school and event place. She inspired women by telling them who they are during the TREM Ejigbo Annual Women Convention/ Mothering Sunday, 2021. 

The Executive Director also inspired the children at Federal Government College Odogbolu on the Day of the African Child 2021 to accelerate the charter implementation on Child’s Rights to establish the dream Africa fit for children. Another organization she supported is the “Every Girl Wins Institute Programme” in Lagos, Nigeria. In the 2021 programme, she encouraged girls to pursue their goals without wavering because woman’s rights are human rights.

Lastly, we organized an outreach Christmas event at the local community level tagged “The Sweet Evening,” where all the girls in the local community came together to interact and discuss their aspirations. The meeting closed the gap between the rich and the less privileged girl child.

AWARDS

2021 was an award-winning year for us at Leadership Foundation For African Girl Child and Women. One of our mentees (Miss Elena Favour Ohaneme) won Youth Leadership Role-Model Award from Every Girl Wins Institute, a foundation based in the U.S.

In addition, the Executive Director of the Foundation, Mrs. Viola E. Okoro, received “The East London Glocal Engagement Award,” an award from the University of East London Alumni. The award recognizes her exceptional contribution and commitment to creating positive change which improves the lives of others within East London or further afield.

The year 2020 was extraordinary, with the COVID- 19 outbreak and other challenges. We planned to consolidate on our previous programmes which we had started the pre-planning exercise before the pandemic outbreak which put almost everything at a halt. 

 LOW-INCOME WOMEN SPONSORED EMPOWERMENT PROGRAMMES SOUTH EAST, NIGERIA (TRAIN WOMAN TRAIN NATION).

From January 4 to 15, 2020, the stakeholders’ programme meetings were held in the three South-Eastern Nigeria locations and concluded before the pandemic outbreak which limited movement and social gathering.

HUMANITARIAN SERVICE

On February 14, 2020, we visited Charitas Orphanage And Widowhood home in Igando, and Old Peoples’ Home (Chep) in Jankande Estate, Ejigbo both in Lagos State with gift items.

EMPOWERMENT 

On March 8, 2020, being the International Women’s Day, we empowered some low- income women in Isuti- a Lagos suburb with skills and a revolving loan to start their small businesses. 

PANDEMIC ERA

We supported women in their thousands in different locations in Nigeria with food items as palliatives, and some with money with our partnering NGO ( AFSF). Besides, the girl children were offered airtime for data to enhance their online education. We also created an online leadership community to help them interact while at home.

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE GIRL CHILD

October 11 is the day set aside to celebrate girls all over the world. We sensitised the public around Ejigbo on the girl child abuse with placards and songs. Telling the public to respect the wish of the girl child. Her no is no so, save her from abuse. Most of these programmes were accomplished with the collaboration of AFSF, CWAY and other kind donors.

• Humanitarian Service Day Support (Valentine Day Programme (February 14, 2019) )

Title: Humanitarian Service Support Day

Venues: Ronik Comprehensive College Ejigbo, Isolo General Hospital’s Female Ward & Centre for Destitute Empowerment International at number 8, Makanjuola Close, Paiko Idimu, Lagos all in Ejigbo and Igando / Ikotun LCDA under Oshodi Isolo and Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State, Nigeria.  

Date of Event: February 14, 2019 

February 14, marked our first annual programme. It is a day set aside by our Foundation, Leadership Foundation for African Girl Child and Women, to reach out to some special people in the society through a humanitarian gesture. The Foundation observes this special day annually, by visiting orphanage homes and government-owned hospital female ward.

 On February 14, 2019, we visited Isolo General Hospital’s Female Ward and Centre for Destitute Empowerment International with some gift items for the female patients on admission, and special children in the Destitute Home. On the visit day, Our team briefly attended the Ronik Comprehensive College Cultural Week Event, where the Executive Director of the foundation, Mrs. Viola Okoro, was officially invited as one of the speakers. She spoke on “Parenting the 21st Century Child,” and her book on the “Effective Approaches to Parenting a Super Girl” was presented officially to all the attendees. 

We visited the females in the hospital ward, interacted with them one on one, showing them as much care and love as possible and giving them gift items. The patients in the female hospital ward were grateful. 

In the same manner, we visited the Destitute Home and interacted with the children as well. The most inspiring of it all was some volunteers that dedicated their day for the humanitarian service day annually, who left all they were doing to show care and love to these special ones. We appreciate the sponsors, management and staff, volunteers, and fans of our organisation that made our outing a huge success.

• AWARENESS WALK

Venue: Ronik International School Ejigbo, Lagos.  

Date of Event: April 2, 2019  

On April 2, 2019, some girls from Ronik International School Ejigbo, Lagos, organised a road walk to build awareness among the public on issues regarding the girl child. They walked through the streets in their neighbourhoods with different placards against girl child issues. They appealed to members of the public to save the girl child by exposing sexual abuse or intention to abuse the girl child sexually. The road walk leader was Miss Ifeoma Ezema, the School Health Prefect. It was indeed an enjoyable experience. Mrs. Viola Okoro, the Executive Director of the Foundation, was the Guest Speaker at the event.

• CLOSING PARENTAL GAP (PUBLIC ENLIGHTENMENT)

Date: May 11, 2019

On May 11, 2019, Mrs. Viola Okoro, the Executive Director of Leadership Foundation for African Girl Child and Women, presented her book, “Effective Approaches to Parenting a Super Girl” to parents of St. Francis Secondary School Idimu – Lagos students. The book presentation created an opportunity to discuss some parental issues affecting children, especially the girl child. The discussion held at the school hall during the Parent and Teachers Association (PTA) meeting. She enlightened parents, teachers, and management of the school, on the need to close the parental gap created by parents’ inability to embrace the present parenting challenges and equip themselves with the required skills that could help them parent well.

Mrs. Okoro stressed on the need for parents to join hands in closing the gap. By spending a minimum of 20 minutes daily with each child, adding that this would create room for meaningful and friendly interaction with the child, as well as close the gap that might lead to parents’ memorable old age experience.

• TRAIN WOMEN TRAIN NATIONS ((TWTNs) Sponsored Empowerment Programme For Low Income/ Disadvantaged Women)

For the past two years, Leadership Foundation for African Girl Child and Women(LFAGCW), in collaboration with African Family Support Foundation (AFSF) have engaged in empowering some low-income women within Isuti – Igando, (a Lagos suburb) in Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State. We train and equip them with simple skills to help them make appropriate use of the revolving loan made available to them by the foundations. A good number of the women were trained in skills such as liquid soap making and pastries for free, while a new revolving loan was given to some of them to empower them financially. The training was to provide women with an equal learning opportunity. It was fun and inspiring.

• CELEBRATING STREET CHILDREN (Promoting the “He for She” Approach To Girl Child Issues)

Event: Children’s Day Celebration

Date: May 27, 2019

Children’s Day, being May 27 of every year is the day set aside by the United Nations to celebrate children all over the world. On this day, a lot of children make various demands (that are of interest to them) from their parents. However, most children who found themselves not privileged to leave in flats or mansions but in a face me I face you house or street (Street boys and girls) hardly enjoy the same privilege that the children from Semi Elite or Elite homes have.

Considering the disadvantaged/less privileged children living among us, Leadership Foundation for African Girl Child and Women celebrated Children’s Day Party for the Street Children at the venue mentioned above. We used the programme to enlighten children on their rights, and some of the challenges faced by girl children. They were encouraged to join the team that is working towards the eradication of girl child abuse. The party was free, and any child passing by who was willing to catch fun was allowed to join, especially the less privileged. The programme was full of fun and inspiring.

The unique and modern dancing steps from children, whose parents were well to do, made the event memorable. There was no form of discrimination as the children had equal fun and opportunity to mingle with one another.

In the speech remark of the Executive Director of the Foundation, Mrs. Viola E. OKORO, she reminded the children that they are the future leaders of the country. As such, they should guide against selfish lifestyles and consider other children in all their dealings. They were encouraged to be good children to their families and society.

She stressed that they should have the right attitude to life and pay more attention to things that could enhance their development.

In the interactive session, children were taught about their body parts, especially the parts that are private to them. How to protect them, and report to their parents if anyone takes advantage of them.

Building Winning Attitude To Girl – Child Development

 Venue: Kaduna State, (North West Nigerian Geopolitical Zone)

As we prepare for our fourth geopolitical zone programme in Kaduna State, tagged, “Building Winning Attitude To Girl – Child Development,” representing the North West Zone in Nigeria. The Executive Director of our Foundation, Mrs. Viola Okoro, visited Kaduna State to meet with the programme’s collaborators and other stakeholders. She also attended the Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria (MWAN) programme with Dr (Mrs) Sandra C. Okoli, member of the association, and a supporter of the foundation during her visit to Kaduna State Secretariat for the programme collaboration in June 2019.

 The Kaduna State Deputy Governor, First Ladies of Kaduna and Niger States, and other professional men and women were present at the MWAN occasion.

These professional women are working hard to meet up with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by the year 2030 and have some men (He for She) supporting them to achieve the goals.

• International Day of the Girl Child

International Day of the Girl Child is slated for October 11 every year. It is a day set aside to celebrate the girl child all over the world. The Leadership Foundation for African Girl Child and Women empowered girls with soap making skills and vital information that could help them make a living and creating financial security for their families. We equipped them with the production skill that would enhance their productive strength and potentials.

 It was a successful event achieved with the collaboration of other stakeholders and interest groups such as NTA 10, NAPTIP, CWAY Food and Beverages, and Zonal Hair Dressers’ Leader Ejigbo. We also played host to other girls who attended the event on their own. The experience was exciting. The girl children left happy and determined to start a small scale production to empower themselves financially. The Girl Child of the Day later addressed the participants. The video and pictures will speak more about the event. 

• Programme Evaluation

Venue: Isuti/ Igando

Date: December 5, 2019

As we know, December is assumed to be a stock-taking month for most people. Leadership Foundation for African Girl Child and Women evaluated the performance of the low-income women trained and empowered them financially for free on March 8, 2019, being “The International Women’s Day Celebration.” The program evaluation took place at Isuti, Igando, (a Lagos Suburb) in Nigeria on December 5, 2019. The programme impact was tremendous and encouraging. One of the women that were empowered usually sleeps in her husband’s shop doing nothing, but because of the programme, she now produces and sells liquid soap. She had trained six (6) women for free because our organization trained and empowered her at no cost. We appreciate the African Family Support Foundation for collaborating with us. We also appreciate individuals and co-operate organizations, especially CWAY Food and Beverages, for their product supports.

WAY FORWARD: In the year 2020, we will go on with our old projects that are inconclusive, but if the need for a new programme arises, we would look at it and consider it, if the project is essential to us.

The February 14^th Event has become an annual programme and from previous annual reports, it appears that each year, our programme begins with this particular programme. It can be very exciting when you find yourself meeting the need of others.

February 14, is the day set aside by our foundation to reach out to some special people in a humanitarian manner. Leadership Foundation for African Girl Child and Women observes this special day on February, by visiting an orphanage home and a government owned hospital’s female ward. The places we visited in 2018 were situated in Igandu/ Ikotun Local Council Development Area (LCDA) of Lagos State. 

The names of the special places we visited with gift items on that special day were, Charitas Orphanage & Widowhood Foundation and Igando General Hospital’s Female & Casualty Wards. The Foundation’s team spent time with the children in the home, had discussions with them and gave them gift items. It was an amazing experience, watching the children in the orphanage home, play and receive our care support in addition to the gift items, which made our day memorable. 

In similar manner, we spent some time with the female patients in the Female Hospital Ward, showing them as much care and love as we could and we gave them gifts as well. The patients in the ward were really grateful. However, the most exciting experience was how some people left their jobs to offer care to others who were not privileged enough to help themselves at that moment. New volunteers joined us confessing that what we were doing was amazing and needful. Last year’s humanitarian day was real fun and memorable! We appreciate our sponsors who made our outing a huge success.

• Title: Building Winning Attitude To Girl – Child Development

 Venue: Uyo in Akwa Ibom State, (South – South Nigerian Geopolitical Zone)

Date of Event: February 23, 2018

The Third Edition of Building Winning Attitude To Girl – Child Development was held in February 23, 2018 at Adia Obong Secondary School, Uyo,  Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria representing South South Nigerian Geopolitical Zone. The programme targets teenage girls and requires huge financial support. The programme supports the overall development of teenage secondary school girls.  Leadership Foundation For African Girl Child And Women collaborated with African Family Support Foundation, NAPTIP (a government agency that prohibits human trafficking in Nigeria), Adia Obong Secondary School (the venue school) and UNFPA (an international agency that has interest in the development of girls) in getting the programme done. The girls benefited from the presentations made, interactive session, questions and answers among others. They asked some challenging questions on how to handle issues such as human trafficking, abuse, low-self image and manage their failures among others. It was a very memorable experience, listing and discussing their present issues were quite revealing. They were grateful and we were happy we did. Our appreciation goes to our sponsors and the collaborated teams; you mean so much to us! Together we can win.

• Title: Catch Them Young Programmes

Venue: Winning Youth school Umuahia, Abia State, Nigeria.

Date of Event: February 26, 2018.

In the month of February, we visited Winning Youth School at Aba Road in Umuahia, Abia state on our way back from Uyo, Akwa Ibom Programme. Leadership awareness was created among the girls and an interactive session was held. The girls were happy and they enjoyed the programme. They showed so much interest in becoming future leaders. Another programme would be planned for them especially now that our Elite Girls Leadership Enhancement Programme is progressing, where girls are expected to lead from where they are. Sharing our time with them was a great honour.

Venue: Cedars World Nursery and Primary School, Surulere, Lagos, Date of Event: March 7, 2018.

On March 7, 2018, the management of Cedars World Nursery and Primary School, Surulere, Lagos State in collaboration with our foundation organised an interactive session for girls in the school during their Gender Week. It was interesting, leadership awareness was created and they were taught how to navigate their life issues. The girls were happy and asked many questions which revealed their different learning levels and understanding. They enjoyed the programme and were greatly inspired on how to live and take ownership of their lives.

Date of Event: April 29, 2018

On April 29, 2018, the children church department of TREM Ejigbo in collaboration with our foundation organised an interactive session for the girl children in the church. The Executive Director, Leadership Foundation for African girl child and women (Mrs Viola Okoro) was part of the team that handled the session. It was quite revealing and interesting. The children were happy that we shared our time with them and they learned new things that can help them navigate some life issues.

Venue: Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Primary and Secondary school Umuahia 

Date of Event:  May 28, 2018.

May 27^th popularly known as the Children’s Day fell on a Sunday in 2018. Due to Sunday was a weekend, many schools celebrated the event on Monday being 28 and others at their convenient day within the week.  MOUAUWA foundation headed by the University Vice Chancellor’s wife, a  University Foundation set up to empower girls and women organised this year’s Children’s Day Celebration in collaboration with. Leadership Foundation for African Girl Child and Women. The event was organised for the University Primary and Secondary School students in their various environs. The turnout of students was huge and impressive both in the primary and secondary sessions of the event. The Executive Director of our foundation Mrs Viola Okoro represented her organisation, The Host, Vice Chancellor’s wife (Barr. (Mrs) Bertha N. Otunta was present with other important dignitaries. In spirit of collaboration our organisation handled the workshop and mentoring session of the programme which were centred on parenting, leadership and digital literacy from kid’s perspective. The children were happy and made a common request in the programme. They are pleading to parents to spend little time with them to enable them experience a balanced parenting and the genuine love of parents. It was very exciting exploring how children would parent if given the opportunity, it was real fun.

The fun of Children’s Day Celebration took us to Bertha Bright Kids Academy Afikpo, Ebonyi State. The management of the school, the programme host Barr. Bertha N. Otunta in collaboration with Leadership Foundation for African Girl Child and Women organised the event for children of the school and other schools around. Our foundation handled the leadership mentoring and workshop sessions as their support for the event. It was fun, watching children express themselves.

This is an annual programme, a day set aside by United Nations to celebrate girls all over the world. The 2018 edition of this programme was organised by the venue school in collaboration with our foundation for Cedars World students and other schools around. It was a fun filled day and very impactful as well. The children performed their best and learned how to be empowered as well. The venue school’s contribution was huge in making this year’s event memorable. The media and an International agency (UNFPA) were present.

During the news hour of Nigerian Television Authority 2 (NTA 2) Lagos on The International Day of Girl Child, The Executive Director of our Foundation (Mrs Viola E. OKORO) was interviewed on the way forward for the African Girl Child putting into consideration many challenges that affect her development and the interview video clip can be accessed in any of our media pages.

Venue: United Nations Information Centre, Lagos, Nigeria.

Date: August 28, 2018

Several meetings were held with our collaborating team, volunteers and the management of our foundation deliberating on ways to render quality and effective services to humanity. However, the United Nations Information Centre monthly dialogue was centred on strategies that would make gender equality in Nigeria achievable by 2030. It was a stakeholders meeting and most invited organisations were present and the meeting served as a wakeup call to realising the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 5). Realising the SDG 5 was the core discussion in the August Monthly Dialogue, which is important to our foundation.

Symbol of Hope Foundation (NGO) on their 5^th International Women’s Day Award Dinner honoured Mrs Viola E. OKORO with a Humanitarian Service Award in recognition of Leadership Foundation For African Girl Child And Women selfless service to humanity.

• Title:  Award of Gratitude

        Date of Event: August 4, 2018.

An Award of Gratitude was presented to Viola E. OKORO (Mrs), Executive Director, Leadership Foundation For African Girl Child and Women after delivering speech on “Challenges of Parenting The 21ST Century Child”. The event held during the installation of Rotarian Cajetan Odoemena Awuja (KSM) as The 32ND President of Rotary Club of Okota District 9110, Nigeria on Saturday August 4, 2018. Many professional men and women were present and the speech changed some parents’ parenting mind set because some parents from the audience actually acknowledged gaining new parenting techniques and knowledge that can grow the present century child.

Title: Book Launch

Venue: TREM International Head Quarter Church, Obanikoro Lagos

Date: December 1, 2018

The Board of Trustees, Leadership Foundation For African Girl Child And Women launched the book titled:”Effective Approaches To Parenting A Super Girl” by Viola E. OKORO (Mrs), Executive Director of the foundation.

The book was written to create more awareness on the need for proper parenting of the girl child and also empowered girl children with the right information required to tackle the menace of sexual abuse challenges they may encounter during their development. According to readers, the book is phenomenal and timely due to its problem solving nature and it was written out of experience and proffers guidelines on how to navigate the present day to day challenges associated with parenting. The book has really been appreciated by most parents and schools that went through it. She wrote the book out of her personal experience and the experience she had interacting with girls among others.  We are glad, the book is adding value to many lives especially, the girl child.

Title: Death

The Board of Trustees, Management and Volunteers of Leadership Foundation For African Girl child And Women lost a BOT member of the Foundation named Mrs Patricia Chinyere Adebambo on May 11, 2018 and she has been buried in June. May God reward her selfless service on earth and grant her eternal rest. Amen.

Note: All our programmes are free for girls and women and mentoring girls is one on one basis. This can be done through online or offline depending on proximity and urgency.

Train Women Train Nations Project is ongoing although, most women didn’t return the loan without interest given to them however; we would keep on trying until we get a team out of them that can change others because their transformation can actually come from within.

SCHOLARSHIPS

The tuition scholarship is ongoing and supporting the girl child progressive development is ongoing as well. We register students for WAEC/ NECO exams depending on availability of funds because the registration  is sponsored by individuals.

INCONCLUSIVE PROGRAMME:

The Elite Girls Leadership Enhancement Programme is still in progress although, much has not been done in that regard. However, the main focus of our programmes this year would be on that.

OUR 2019 PROGRAMME HIGHLIGHT   

• February 14 is Our Humanitarian Day Service; we will visit the less-privileged ones in our community to share our corporate love.

• MARCH 8 is International Women’s Day
• October 11 is the International Girl-Child Day Celebration.
• Elite Girls Leadership Enhancement Programme (Transforming Africa through girl child leadership).
• We would try as much as we can to continue with some of our ongoing programmes but we are going to concentrate more on the Elite Girls Leadership Enhancement programme.
• Other programmes may come up especially programmes that require collaboration and other stakeholders planning input.
• The dates of the programmes could be adjusted if the need arises.
